MIL STD 130 specifications emphasize certain manufacturing criteria for UID data marking and encoding. According to these specifications, UID labels can include two forms of data. These are HRI, or Human Readable Information, and MRI, or Machine Readable Information. A label, tag, or nameplate can incorporate this information in human and machine readable formats, following the required MIL STD 130 criteria. This is also the case for those items, which have been marked directly with UID data. These regulations specify qualification standards regarding the size and character height, type of data, and nomenclature. However, MRI, or machine readable information, is an important component of today’s UID marking.

As for MRI data, it must fulfill the IUID criteria, that is mandated by DFARS. DFARS mandated that unique identification marking should be done performed with a 2D data matrix symbol. This process recommends ISO 15434 syntax regulations. Application of the data matrix ECC 200 symbol and ISO 15434 are recognized for non DFARS recommended data. The semantics of ISO 15418 or ATA CSDD are identified for non-DFARS ...
... recommended data. What follows is some important information regarding the process of data matrix implementation.

• Data matrix has been recognized as the most credible code encryption system for the UID marking process. A data matrix bar code may include linear symbols with human readable data according to the demands of a specific contract. This information can be added in text. This information may include a part number, manufacturer’s license number, and other information regarding agreements or product manufacturing.

• As for small items that offer little space for UID marking, an abbreviation of human readable information may be included. MIL STD 130 provides a list of accepted abbreviations and data for exceptional cases. At the same time, human readable information may be omitted from the product surface due to a lack of space. In such cases, packaging parts may include the omitted data in human readable form.

• MRI data must include MIL STD 130 required content in MRI marks. The EID number and PIN number are necessary for MRI data. As for non-UID products, an enterprise identifier number should be included in MRI data codes. The EID number and PIN number are to be incorporated in MRI data that are used in UID products. A PIN number is the product identifying number. For UID compliance it is necessary to mention the original PIN number along with part and lot or batch number of a product. In cases where the original part number undergoes a change, it is necessary to include the amended part number of the product. The serial number is another important UID marking component to include in MRI compliant labeling.
