The History Of Hong Kong Hostel And Guest House
It is no objection that Hong Kong is an international city connecting in between Eastern and Western culture that attracted a lot of visitors. For most of travelers and visitors to Hong Kong, the first important thing is find a nice but cheaper accommodation to stay in downtown. However in Hong Kong, there are only have 3-5 star hotels but don’t have any 1-2 star hotels at all. If you want to find a budget accommodation in Hong Kong especially in downtown, the only choice is the Guest Houses or hostels.
In Hong Kong Guest House is not 100% guest house; hostel is not 100% hostel. Let me explain why and what they are. Since the property in Hong Kong is so expensive (Usually US$1k-1.5k per sqft), if the owners have own buildings, they will rather invest to be high class hotels instead of low budget 1-2 star hotels, even not mention that to be a much lower income hostel. Therefore, 99% of hostels in Hong Kong don’t have own buildings with private entry gate. The operators only can open the hostels (or said guest house) in the high rise residential apartments. They acquire one ...
... or few apartments on different floors in the same building or even from different buildings nearby. The operator divides an apartment into few very small private studios (ensuites). By consolidating few of apartments together, a hostel is being formed.
As you can see, the hostel doesn’t have own building with own entrance, you can't say it is a real hostel. The rooms are spreading in different residential apartments but you wouldn’t live with owner, it is not really a guest house too. You will be check in into one apartment inside a residential building but stay in different floor or another residential apartment nearby. Some of better case is that the owner consolidates few Hong Kong Apartments on the same floor so that all the rooms will be at the same place. But the guests still have to share the entrance and lift with local residential people.
In above situation, you wouldn’t have common area available in most of hostels. It is because the space in Hong Kong is too expensive to have common area. The owner rather builds few more rooms instead of common area. In the room, you will only a bed and TV. If lucky, you may have a table with a chair. Most of the case, you will have own private toilet with shower in the room. You wouldn’t find any cabinet or cloth set for your cloths. Therefore, a lot of guests have been complained that the rooms of HongKong Hostel just like a shoes box. It is just too small, that is the Hong Kong.
Fortunately, there is one and only one hostel in Causeway Bay that it has own building and private entrance just being opened not long ago. The hostel got big common area and even roof top garden. I think this is the only exceptional case.
