Stress is the biggest obstacle to success in any field, including singing. You need to overcome stress before you begin to sing for several reasons, like making your crack when you need to take the notes smoothly. You will be told during singing training in London – if the institution is all that it claims to be – that stress during singing can cause hyperventilation; i.e. too much of oxygen in the system. This can lead to a gasping or panting sound coming instead of a sweet soaring of notes. While a certain amount of panting may be appropriate in certain kinds of songs, in most it will turn off the listener.
It is useless to imagine that any competitive individual would ever be truly stress free. However, successful management of stress can help you to gradually overcome it. Remember that if you are stressed out while singing, you won't be able to concentrate on the melodic structure of the piece and might end up singing off key or the wrong tune. (The latter is the lesser of the two evils.) Check before joining any vocal classes in London ...
... whether they pay any attention to helping the students overcome stress while singing. There are certain deep breathing routines which can help calm an individual. Also, if somebody is hyperventilating, s/he should try to breathe into a paper bag.
Excellent singing is closely related to proper breathing and breath control. You would be better able to master songs with a wide range of notes when you are stress free. Just as you would be trained to shift voice registers during singing training in London, you would also need to know how to open your voice when reaching for the higher ranges. This ensures that your voice is not overstrained.
One of the tricks of the trade you might pick up when you attend vocal classes in London is to keep the harder songs for the last during a show. When you sing simpler pieces initially, you allow your vocal chords to warm up. And performing the simpler pieces without a hitch will help you gain confidence to sing the difficult pieces smoothly.
