Springtime in New York is a time of year when the city comes alive with the sights, sounds, and smells of a population emerging from the confines of a long winter indoors. 76th Annual Whitney Biennial - A New York Event

Established in 1932 as a bi-annual event for the recently opened Whitney Museum, the 76th annual Whitney Biennial began on March 1 this year and will continue until May 27. More than just another art exhibit, the Biennial presents the work of the top one hundred emerging American artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers, musicians, and internet graphic designers. 11th Annual Great Night in Harlem

On May 17th, your stay in New York City could include a trip to the venue where many of the greats in comedy and music have performed in the past. The Apollo Theatre in Harlem hosts an annual event called simply “Great Night in Harlem” to raise money for struggling jazz musicians in the United States. Organized with a sincere desire to preserve a precious piece of American musical culture, the passion put forth by the performers at this event is always a sight to behold. Quincy Jones, Roberta Flack, and the esteemed Bill Cosby have all put on memorable shows here. It’s being held this year on May 17th if you happen to be in town. The Apollo is located at 253 West 125th Street.


The 39th Annual Ninth Avenue International Food Festival

First art, then music and comedy - you must be getting hungry by now. How about we send you over to Ninth Avenue, where you’ll find fifteen blocks of tasty cuisine from all over the world? May 19th and 20th, on Ninth Avenue, between 42nd and 57th Street, over two hundred different vendors will be serving ethnic food and drink from different countries such as Poland, Italy, Spain, Greece, Japan, Thailand and many more. The event is free to all, happens rain or shine, and even has a children’s pavilion set up between 53rd and 54th where the kids can play and the parents can rest for a few moments.


AIDS Walk New York

You may not see it if you’re down on Ninth Avenue, but May 20th is the day for the annual AIDS Walk. First organized in 1985, it is now one of the most well attended events in New York, with over 40,000 participants. A 10km jaunt, the AIDS Walk starts at Sheep Meadow in Central Park West, winds through the Park up to 110th Street, down 110th to Riverside Ave, Riverside to 86th Street, and then back into Central Park. You can attend for free, make a donation, or sponsor another walker.


Long Island Mozart Festival 2012 - A New York Event

End the month with a classical music performance at what is considered by many to be the most beautiful gardens in the world. Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island is a magnificent mansion completed in 1906 that contains over two hundred acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes. During the weekend of May 26th through 28th they will be hosting the Long Island Mozart Festival. Lawn tickets are $10, $8 for seniors, and $5 for students. Children under six attend for free.
