Online shopping in India has come a long way from its difficult start. Now with Web 2.0 technologies, the online consumer is flooded with deals, daily deals, best deals, online deals, discount coupons and promo codes. Technology has become the great equalizer in this game. The best deals online are available to those who know where to look.
The main trends in online shopping in India are:
1) Social Media: Most brands, especially those that focus on youth have taken to social media to promote their products. Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus and Linkedin are now an integral part of a brand’s marketing strategy. 4) Travel websites that offer tickets are the backbone of e-commerce in India. More than 80% of the online transactions in India pertain to rail and air tickets. Slowly other sectors like books, mobile phones, cameras and holiday packages have also started gaining ground.
5) Online insurance policies are big hit with the younger generation as they give them the flexibility to be bought anywhere and anytime. The ease and speed of online transactions also is a major factor in the success of online sales.
6) Online shopping in India dominated by men who form over 80 percent of the client base. T only 18 percent of the customers of online goods in India were women. This difference represents a huge opportunity for retailers as the number of women who get online to buy stuff will only increase. Already a number of websites which exclusively target women have started up in India.
7) Websites that offer user generated comments and have a huge archive of content are preferred by customers. Also viral marketing campaigns are a huge draw and many companies are using this method to attract customers.
