If you’re a business owner or manager, chances are you’ve encountered this problem more than once: your employees spend too much time doing personal business on the Internet and not enough time performing tasks related to their jobs. It’s an all-too-familiar story. The Internet, with all its advantages, has brought some disadvantages as well, and this would be near the top of that list for many employers.

When considering how to resolve this issue, it’s tempting to use some form of computer tracking software. After all, if you knew which websites your employees were visiting on a regular basis, you might be able to either block those sites or at the very least keep track of how much time your employees were wasting.

But with the recent advent of smart phones, even specialized software designed to track employee Internet usage won’t work. Thanks to smart phones, which the majority of workers bring with them to work every day, your employees have access to the Internet literally at their fingertips all day long every day. You might be able to use Computer Tracking Software ...
... on their workplace computers, but you can’t use it on their smart phones. Obviously, this is not the answer to the problem.

The Key is Motivation
The fact of the matter is that if your employees want to waste time at work, they will find a way to do it—whether it’s on a workplace computer, on a smart phone or with no computer at all. The key to resolving the problem doesn’t lie in tracking computer use, but instead in making your employees want to work.

Only a fortunate few of us work simply because we truly enjoy what we’re doing. The truth is that most people go to work because they have to do so to earn a living. When you think of it in these terms, it’s really no surprise that so many employees find ways to waste time during the day. The only real solution to unproductive employees is to inspire them to do a better job. Money is always an effective motivator, but you’ll be amazed at how much you can motivate employees without even offering them a raise. Begin with measuring their productivity during the day, then establishing goals for them to improve their level of productivity. You’ll be surprised at how your employees will respond! If you set higher and higher productivity goals for your employees, the vast majority of them will achieve those goals. Many will exceed them! All you need to do is measure their performance and set goals for improvement.
