You must be wondering what this W105 is all about; well this is the codename for the new Scorpio which is being developed by Mahindra. Mahindra changed its brand image from a tractor manufacturer to a passenger car manufacturer has come a long way. It took the utility vehicle maker precisely 10 years to transform its image from a commercial truck maker to a SUV maker, well that is a huge achievement is a short span of time. Scorpio is up for a complete and major facelift and will most probably be launched within two years of time. Therefore Mahindra has planned to give a complete makeover to the SUV and present it in a new avatar for its customers, the company hopes that it will receive the same love from the Indian customers as it received earlier.
The company does not want customers to perceive new Scorpio as a new SUV or product, they want customers to understand that it is the same Scorpio but offered in a new package. Company officials have been tight lipped about the details regarding the new Scorpio, but they have revealed that it is going to be endowed with more rugged look. Speculations also suggest that new Mahindra Scorpio could get a new and more powerful engine to synchronize with the new look of the SUV. The increasing competition in the SUV segment is being sighted as a strong reason behind Scorpio undergoing the knife. Other auto companies like Maruti Suzuki India, Ford, Toyota, General Motors, Nissan and are developing new age SUVs which they will be rendering in the domestic market soon. The company had no expertise in making passenger cars therefore it was a good surprise for everyone when Mahindra cracked the mass segment with this SUV that still rules people’s hearts. The company spent around Rs 600 crores on the development of Scorpio. When Scorpio was launched it was marketed as a car since the company thought that the Indian car market was ready to for a sports utility vehicle back then. The company had to promote Scorpio as a big car which could accommodate seven people comfortably , they did the sale during the launch of its MUV, Mahindra Xylo in the Indian car market. SUVs i India currently have a share of 15 to 16 per cent which is close to 30% in the U.S car market. The utility vehicles sales in India surged 16% in the last year with 367,000 units sold as compared to 315,000 units sold in the previous year. The growth numbers are really good if we consider the fact that the car segment grew meagerly by 2.01 per cent million units.
