After almost a decade, I remembered Priya aunty! Well, you all know we are running the “Back To School Week” on Shopo.in… We were at lunch discussing our nostalgic school days, and for no reason, my heart first went to Priya aunty.

We first met her when we went to 9th standard. On our first day, we had huddled up in the cycle stand, talking excitedly about vacations when the red Maruti 800 crossed us and came to a halt. The door opened and she stepped out. A starched and ironed classic white cotton saree, draped with crisp pleats, pearl earrings to match it, a tiny nose ring that sparkled in the sun, and glass bangles that clanked in harmony, she looked like an angel. We had all stopped talking and were gaping at her as she gracefully took off the glasses, and opened the back door. A little girl in pinafore stepped out. Priya Aunty held her hands, walked towards us (almost in slow motion) and smiled that 100 dollar smile. We were awestruck. A glance across the ground told us we were not alone.

After that day, Priya Aunty was the new hero(ine) of school. I still remember the Saturday she came in jeans and ...
... a crisp blue formal shirt. We could hear audible gasps and a long “Wow!” behind us. The people who gathered in the grounds waiting to get a glance of her grew from a dozen to about a 100 by end of the year. Some of us who dared to make conversations with her attained star status in the class. We all decided that, when we grew up, we will dress exactly like her. 3 years later, in the last day of our school life, we got the last glance of Priya Aunty, and a special one. She was in a silk saree, draped gorgeously as ever, wearing heavy temple jewelry jhumkas and a matching necklace. I remember a friend sobbing as she sped away in her car. We knew we would miss her!

So why was someone who we only saw from a distance such a big star in our school? (With boys and girls alike) She was in a way, our style inspiration, our first style Icon. And why are we going on and on about this Priya female on an official blog? Probably because we want all of you to be style inspirations! In your kid’s school (or your nephew/niece’s school even!) and here’s how you could…

STYLE 1 : THE SAREE ANGEL

Nothing beats the quintessential saree, for the school mom look! Pair it up with elegant matching earrings, a simple neck piece if you need to, and some pretty glass bangles for a Desi finish. A long neck piece and a clutch could give it a modern edge!

STYLE 2 : MODERN MOMMY

Mommies out there who still maintain that perfect figure, go on and experiment with jeans and shirts. Skip T-shirts for the school visits. They somehow don’t fit the mommy bill! Keep the accessories to the minimum. A bling ring and a stylish bag, preferably leather, should complete the look! If you have a super toned body and are willing to experiment, we would even say, try a nice dress!

STYLE 3 : KURTI+LEGGINGS

This is probably the trickiest of them all. Wear a Kurta that will make you stand out from the rest, and at the same time not make you look too dressed up. Also, be honest with yourself. If you are slightly on the bulky side, go for full arm kurtas, that are also long enough. Sleeveless and short kurtas generally tend to make people look a little stouter than they already are.

STYLE 4 : HEP SALWAR

Anarkalis are the order of the day. And a mom in a pretty salwar or anarkali suit definitely is bound to become the sensation of the school! Go with pastel shades, mute embroideries and elegant finishes. This way, you might become the style icon for the teachers as well!

Now, that’s from our end. What do you think is the best way to dress up for a school day?
