Leeds can be referred to as one of the major cities of Great Britain situated on ‘River Aire', in West Yorkshire. It's the administrative center and urban core of the broader metropolitan area of City of Leeds. The rural area of Leeds had been awarded the status of being a city in the year 1893. However, in 1974, the above status got transferred to bigger new-fangled metropolitan area called ‘City of Leeds'. The present scenario is such that even though Leeds is being referred to having an urban status, it cannot be mentioned on the legal basis till discussion with respect to the broader area is carried out.

Origin
The origin of City of Leeds can be gone in to by glancing through the fifth century. It was the time when Elmet's kingdom had been covered by Loidis forest. The name ‘Leeds' was derived from the name of this forest.
