Online Hebrew For Kids
Kids have a tendency to learn things differently than adults do (and some say better). So why should online Hebrew be any different? Kids these days are often more internet savvy than the average adult is anyway, so if a kid is going to learn the language via the internet why not let him or her help decide which road is best to travel?
Many online Hebrew courses on the internet today make no particular age distinction as regards to their students, and it may be that some kids will have no trouble coping with this lack of distinction. But others might. Some Hebrew course providers have recognized this and have created courses that are specifically designed for kids.
For those kids who are in families about to immigrate to Israel, there is of course some degree of urgency involved as the student is going to need to integrate with his or her classmates. And then there is the issue of so-called “book” Hebrew versus the (perhaps) more colloquial Hebrew spoken in Israel. There are courses on the internet that take this difference into account by providing live teachers.
As the saying goes, “you have to start ...
... somewhere.” With this in mind, the first thing that is usually taught is the Hebrew alphabet, or more accurately the “Aleph-Bet.” After that, just as in learning English, basic vocabulary skills need to be established. This needs to be clearly understood in formal Hebrew as well as colloquial Hebrew.
At this point, style starts to become important. Kids love games, so many of the online Hebrew courses that are designed for kids adopt this approach to learning. The idea here is simple – make learning fun. Learning is easier when it’s fun.
Another angle that should not be overlooked is using Hebrew as a tool to understand as much about the country of Israel as possible. After all, Israel is the ancient land where Hebrew has been spoken for thousands of years.
The main issue, after picking up the rudiments of Hebrew, is one of communication. As noted earlier, speaking formal “book” Hebrew is one thing, but learning how to communicate on the street is quite another. At least that’s an issue that adults need to concern themselves with, but should kids be at all concerned with any of this?
Again, kids learn differently than adults do. It’s quite possible that the right online Hebrew course will intrinsically prepare them for a transplant to Israel.
