Decaying leaves, windblown debris, and fish waste also contribute to low oxygen levels and sludge buildup. The two ways of decomposition are aerobic and anaerobic. This sludge buildup leads to floating scum algae and give the pond a sewage smell. It is also not the greatest for your fish. Stagnant water also becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Aerobic decomposition occurs in the presence of oxygen and is much quicker with a byproduct of carbon dioxide. A water body that has these problems can greatly benefit from the addition of a floating fountain. Floating fountains pull water up from the bottom reducing thermo cline. The spray from the fountain greatly improves oxygen levels and scum algae will quickly disappear. The smell will disappear as aerobic decomposition breaks up the sludge buildup. Floating fountains provide all these benefits while creating a beautiful display.
