To hide his own shortcomings Frank creates an impression in Bernie's mind that Georgie is responsible for his drinking ways and his downfall. Bernie eventually falls in love with Georgie and tells her so. The play revolves around how Georgie helps Frank regain the confidence that he lost after his son's death.
