If a person jogging through the bushes has a sudden close encounter with a venomous snake or some other dangerous animal, his/her normal respond would be to panic and to run away from the beast as fast as possible.

When the identical feelings of fear and horror come to surface with no valid reasons and when they occur in a completely secure situation (while jogging on the beach or watching a movie at the local cinema) you do not have to be a doctor to conclude that something is not right with your health. Experiencing a few of such episodes in relatively short period of time (a few days or weeks) might be an indication that the person suffers from panic disorder.

At the very early stages the patients become extremely frightened and confused. The physical signs of panic disorder that can include palpitations, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness, excessive sweating, jelly legs etc. make the sufferer to believe that something entirely different is going on inside their bodies. Patients usually seek help at the wrong places. They visit a whole range of various doctors undergoing countless examinations because they ...
... are convinced that the problem is with their heart, lungs, blood pressure and so on. The mental health practitioner is usually last on their list to visit.

During the panic attack patients might believe that they have some kind of the malignant illness, they are going to die on the spot, going mad or to lose control of themselves. Panic attack can occur every time when the patients find themselves in a particular environment or it can just hit without a clear reason regardless of the circumstances. A big number of individuals suffering from panic disorder sometimes develop agoraphobia (fear of open or crowded places from which in a case of panic attack would be difficult to run away or to seek and obtain assistance.)

Panic attacks can even occur during the sleep. Hot weather also has an affect on panic disorder because patients experience more panic attacks during the warm summer days. The main reasons for this are that warm weather accelerates pulse, stimulates dizziness and dehydration. Also, during these days people are more likely to spend their time outdoors and therefore have a much higher possibility of running into unacquainted and unpleasant situations and places.

Despite the fact that the real causes of panic disorder are unknown, some researches have shown that certain kinds of people are more likely to suffer of this disorder than the rest of the population. This group includes people who are shy by nature and who tend is to be worried and over concerned about every single problem in their lives. They continuously question their own abilities and are always unsure whether they are good enough to complete their goals and responsibilities. The signs of their instability and fears are usually visible from their early years (blushing, palm sweating, palpitations, feeling uncomfortable in front of older, unfamiliar people or when confronted by authorities.) Those children spend a lot of time daydreaming and imagining things and show no agonistic spirit and behavior. While sleeping they can also experience dreadful dreams and have accidents with bed wetting. Their perception of other people is sort of naive because they cannot observe the hidden intentions of mean people. Even after repetitive and countles disappointments they do not change their behavior.

It is important to remember that panic disorder is very common medical condition in our population. Although people that show some of the above mentioned symptoms in their childhood have a higher chance of being affected by panic disorder in their maturity, not everyone will. On the other hand, some very confident people that are easygoing and have no apparent obstacles in their lives may be hit by this disorder with no warnings or a logical explanation.
