Once known as a feared penal settlement, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is now mostly known for its virgin beaches and coral reefs.

The Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is located in the Andaman Sea, about1000 km away from the mainland and comprises of about 572 tropical islands out of which only 36 islands are inhabited.

Until the British started detaining Indian prisoners, Andaman and Nicobar Islands were populated mainly by indigenous tribes. Today the majority of the population belong to the Tamilian, Bengali and other settlers from the mainland and some descendants of the tribes.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands were close to the epicentre of the undersea earthquake that resulted in a devastating tsunami wave that caused not only the loss of lives of more than 6000 people but also a lot of coral reefs along with marine life.
