Santiago De Compostela Travel Guide
Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the autonomous region of Galicia in Spain. It is also a famous heritage site. In 1998, it was hailed as the city of culture in Europe. This is also the site of the cathedral which is the last stop in the route of the famous pilgrimage that first began in the 9th century. The pilgrimage is joined by a huge number of pilgrims who either walk, ride bikes or horses to reach their destination which is Santiago.
Santiago has a warm and pleasant climate for most parts of the year. The temperature ranges from 5°C to 20°C. Santiago receives lots of tourists all year round because of its very pleasant weather that is always sunny and warm. The history of Santiago states that it was founded by Suebi in 400 AD, after the fall of the Roman Empire. The city was raided by the Arabs constantly from 711 to 739. In the year 800, Saint James’ remains were discovered in the Santiago and as a result of this discovery, Santiago was declared as a Holy City. During the Napoleonic War, Santiago was captured by France.

The historic center of the city is composed of charming streets, granite buildings and squares that show off the rich history of Santiago that goes back for several hundreds of years. Santiago has lots or restaurants, taverns and bars scattered all over the city. These food establishments serve food from different cuisines aside from the local food. There are restaurants that serve very affordable but delicious food while there are others that cater to the more expensive palate. The traditional dishes of Santiago are often made with beef, fish and other seafood freshly caught from the sea.
There are lots of parks in Santiago and the most popular among them are the Belvis Park, Santo Domingo de Bonaval, Susana Oak Wood and Alameda Park. There are also valleys and trails that are perfect for hiking in Santiago. The city also has beautiful beaches that are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, diving, snorkeling, fishing and other water sports. Santiago also has excellent golf courses. In the evenings, the city also has a very lively nightlife. There are lots of university students, tourists as well as locals having a great time at the clubs, bars and discos in the city.
