Salobrena is a quaint little resort town located along the Costa Tropical of Granada. The old quarter of the town has been very well-preserved and you can still see the old houses built along the side of the hill. The roads are very narrow and steep which is very reminiscent of the old Spanish towns in the past. Upon reaching the top of the hill on Salobrena, you will come upon the beautiful Moorish Castle which is an ancient structure that was built in the 12th century and is flanked on three sides by a steep and rocky cliff. From the top of the hill, you also get a spectacular view of the beautiful coast of the Costa Tropical and the Sierra Nevada in the horizon.
The structure of the ancient castle is still quite sturdy and they even allow the visitors to walk around in some portions of the castle. Before the castle was built, a fort stood on that same hill and according to the legends of the locals the fort was used as a prison for the 3 daughters of Emir Mohammed. The fort was primarily built to serve as a summer home for the kings of the Moors. A short distance down from the hill is the Nuestra Senora del Rosario ...
... which is an ancient church built in the 16th century. It was built on the same site where the old mosque stood. Tourists visit the church to view its famous tower and doorway.
Tourists who want to get more information about the rich history of Salobrena may visit the Museo Magnifico located at the Salobrena town hall. There you will see lots of artefacts and displays about the history of Salobrena. The beach of Salobrena is also quite famous among the visiting tourists. It is divided into two parts due to the El Penon which is a huge headland that sits in the middle of the Salobrena Beach. The El Penon served as a prison during the Roman times. In recent years, the locals have created a man-made reef near the headland to help propagate a huge diversity of marine life in the area. At present, a lot of tourists visit Salobrena, ferienhaus mallorca to enjoy some diving or snorkelling because of the abundance of marine life in the area.
First timers may take some diving lessons from the certified diving instructors at the Hotel Salobrena. The hotel also rents out diving equipment to tourists. Popular local fiestas include the Fiesta of the Virgen del Rosario which is celebrated in October to honour their patron saint. In July, the Virgen del Carmen procession is held where the statue is taken on a procession from La Caleta and then placed on a boat for a fluvial procession with a fireworks display finale.
