Socio-economic development is a broad term that encompasses many concepts and things. Speaking in the simplest term, it is the process, by which the social and economic development of a society takes place. There are a set of parameters by which this development is measured. The indicators for the socio-economic development in Bengal are common to that in rest of the world and include elements like the GDP, literacy and the employment levels of a place etc. Even the intangible factors like individual dignity, personal and physical safety, etc. are also considered while analyzing this process. This process results in empowering people to lead a better and dignified life.

Various non-government organizations or NGO in Kolkata are incessantly working to facilitate these positive changes in the society. They provide free education to the masses, mostly to the children and try to impart various life-skills so that these individuals when grow up can earn their livelihood easily and lead life with dignity. One of the most important aspects of socio-economic development in West Bengal is generation of wealth for sustainable living among the poor. As long as these efforts are not bringing in an immediate financial relief in the destitute families, people will not be able to understand the importance of these. Neither they will be able to realize the importance of education in human life. Various measures have being taken on this aspect in recent times. The government’s 100-working days’ a year employment scheme needs a mention here. Many NGO in Kolkata have been trying their best in spite of their economic constraints and limited resources to promote such projects. They empower the local people with certain skill-based training. Immediately after, they provide their trainees with certain tasks and help them to earn some money in the process. Various religious outfits are working as well to eradicate the misbalances’ of our socio-economic structure. Individuals with a genuine care for the masses are also equally active in the mission.

Such a big task of truly an enormous volume cannot be accomplished by a few strokes of inconsistent effort. It requires a steel-strong willpower and unlimited courage in the first place. The process of socio-economic development in west Bengal has been going on since our independence and no one knows for sure when this will successfully terminate. It requires participation of everyone who is lucky enough to have received proper education. It is nevertheless the domain of the government or that of the NGO in Kolkata alone. If this enormous process has to be successful, it calls for participation of all, irrespective of the barriers of caste, creed or anything else.
