The entire population of the world is inter-connected to each other in one way or another. The foremost way of connection is through the internet. The other way is connection through intranet. The principal difference between these two is that internet connects you to the world, and allows you to share information globally. Whereas, intranet’s access is limited to just a few computers which are connected through the network and sharing data, files, sending messages, etc. is restricted to those computers only. Whatever medium of communication is used, it will join more than one computer. Below, there is a brief description on the different types of networks.
Local Area Network (LAN)
Local area networks are used to establish an internet connection within a specific small area. This small area may cover a colony, or a street. Within these areas, a number of computers are connected to the main computer, from where the internet signals are retrieved. Cables are used to connect the computers. One additional point of using a LAN is that it has a server head from where entertainment stuff can be downloaded for free.

... Wide Area Network (WAN)
The wide area network can establish an internet connection which may not be limited to a small specific area. Instead it may cover large areas, sometimes a whole country too. These WANs are used by very large organizations which have several branches across the country. For instance, take the example of a famous food chain like McDonalds have so many outlets in one country. So, there ought to be a network that can connect all branches to the head office so that the owners are aware of what is going on in their branch. In original, some LANs are connected to a WAN for internet connection. Wide area network do not use cables for connection, as this may be too costly. Instead it uses satellites or telecommunication lines for connection.
Advantages of establishing a network
Now you may see what advantages do connecting through network offers. There are many expensive devices that ought to be used by many persons in one organization. These devices may include laser printers and scanner. By connecting such devices to the network of computer in an organization, there will be no need to have individual printers and scanners for all computers. All the computers can get a printout through one printer connected to the network. Moreover, messages can be sent to different computers on a network, thus promoting effective communication. Data from any computer on the network can be retrieved rapidly and easily. Network software can be purchased and circulated within a network of computers, thus saving the cost of buying individual software for each computer.

Disadvantages of establishing a network
The disadvantages of using a network are briefed in the upcoming sentences. When LAN and WAN are established, they need a proper infrastructure. Therefore, the initial cost of establishing such networks are very high. A slight damage in the network transmission lines can affect all the computers in that network. The same way, a virus, if entered in one of the computers in the network can affect all the devices. Though the disadvantages are less, their outcomes can be devastating so it better to have some precautions against them, so that your network may run smoothly.
