We all have to look for a job now and then. You know the routine, improve your current cv, have a look what's out there, compose resume cover letters, and send the resume off to every job which looks possible, hoping you will be invited for an interview. It's so monotonous, with so few replies, that it is hard to be inspired to carry out a good job on trying to find a job.You have to keep in mind that your curriculum vitae is an advert. The product your cv is advertising is you, or in fact the skills you can provide to a company. Its only purpose is to get you an interview, not to land you the job. Having that in mind, let us take a look at a few of the most common errors: Applying with a one fits all cv - Most people write one cv and send it out with all applications. Since not all the jobs are the same, your resume should not always stay the same. Go ahead and create the generic resume, but don't send it out. You are better off modifying that cv to focus on the needs of the business you're applying for. Making a resume too long - The typical resume looks like the candidate wants to make an impression on the hiring company ...
... with volume. Most businesses don't bother reading more than the first page of your cv, so if you haven't caught their interest by then, you've lost the game. It is important that you strike a balance between relevance and volume. Focusing on your own objectives - Objective statements that point out your own expectations from the job does not impress anybody. Don't forget, you are promoting yourself. Tell that future employer what advantage there is for him in employing you. Focusing on successes, with no outcomes - Telling the future employer that you made a change in the company policy lead to "so what" reaction. However, telling them you saved the business X number of pounds by making that change sparks his or her interest. Writing an autobiographical type of curriculum vitae - While this often is the most common style of resume, it actually does not accomplish what you want it to, neither will it tell anyone reading through it what they want to know. They do not need your life history; these people want to know what you're capable of doing for them. So stay away from a resume that looks like your autobiography.Although this list is not conclusive, I hope you see where it is heading. Create a resume that focuses on the advantage in hiring you, that's what is going to help you get an interview.
