The “outs” Of A Computer

Since the beginning of your school, you might be taught that output devices of a computer are speakers, printers and monitors. This is undoubtedly a true fact that these are the primary devices for any output; however, with the growth of technology, there are many derivative types of equipment of the same devices.

Different kinds of monitors

One of the kinds of monitors is the Visual display units (VDU). These monitors used as display units wherever a print out seems to be unnecessary. At other times, it is extensively used for the desktop publishing or CAD (Computer Aided Design). The size and resolution of the screen may vary as per requirement. Other monitors, or probably televisions, use a cathode ray tube (CRT) for a very high quality display.

LCD stands for liquid crystal display. LCD screen are now widely used in all the laptops because of the fact that they occupy a comparatively lesser space and are not very heavy. They also give out a crispy display. Today, these screens are seen everywhere, in shopping malls, in banks, airports and traffic signals.

... as VDUs is GDU. GDU stands for graphical display units and slightly vary from VDU. They are comparatively larger and use very efficient graphics. Such is the quality of their display that the screen does not appear as if it is made of a lot of tiny dots. Because of their efficient graphics they are widely used in association with the light pen.

Different kinds of printers

Now, you may get to know a lot about the different types of printers. Today, the most widely used laptops are laser printers. Laser printers may print very high quality text and images. They have cartridges known as toner cartridges that use a powder. The result is very fine and satisfactory.

Another type of printer is ink-jet printer. An ink-jet printer consists of nozzles. The ink passes through these nozzles, while the ink boils and bubbles up and squeezes out of the nozzle ends. This produces small dots on to the paper. The dots formed are so small that they produce very high quality images. They are more comfortable to use because they do not make noise while printing. There only set back is that the maintenance costs of this is very high.

Dot-matrix printers, in the today’s’ scenario are considered to be completely outdated. They have been completely replaced by laser and ink-jet printers. However, they are not completely extinct. There are still some applications of them. For example, for a continuous printing on many layers of paper, you will require a dot matrix printer. No other printer may take up the task. Formerly, all these printers were available for the black and white print only. However, with the increase of need and enhancement of graphics, color printers have been introduced to cater the needs of world.

Other devices or methods used for outputting the information are voice output, electrical signals, electric signals, robots, actuators, computerized numerical control, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM).
