Have you ever wondered what happens to all the wildlife during a clearing or development project? In the past, hundreds of hectares of bushland have been cleared to make way for human activities. Most people assume any wildlife in such areas simply runs away and relocates itself elsewhere, but this rarely happens. Rather, it hides and is often killed by heavy machinery or when trees are felled. These days a spotter catcher must be employed to find and rescue such wildlife.

Clearing and development still form a large part of our activities as we seek more farmland and more areas to live in. Bushland is cleared for roads and for high voltage power lines. Swamp areas are drained and new dams flood thousands of hectares. All such areas are homes to much unique wildlife such as koalas, possums, reptiles, amphibians and birds. Without their habitats these creatures cannot survive.

But when there is someone to identify the kind of creatures that are likely to be in an area, to be on the site to find and rescue them before they are injured or killed, then they can be relocated to another suitable area and live to see ...
... another day. This will save many species from becoming extinct.

When mining or other invasive procedures move into an area there needs to be a watch kept on such places as waterways, swamps, lakes and estuaries to ensure they are not made uninhabitable for our wildlife species. To this end an aquatic ecologist should be retained to inspect the areas and ensure that they are not ruined by such activities. Often companies pump out poisons and do not put in adequate protection for the surrounding bushland or aquatic areas.

But if there is some kind of environmental consultancy that can take place before and during operations there is far more likely to be a successful outcome for our unique bushland creatures. And of course, it is not only the creatures that are at risk during such operations but the plant life too.

Wildlife often depends on certain plant species for its survival. Even if it does not, killing out plant species that cannot be found in any other country is a deplorable habit. No one truly knows the exact relationship between many animals and plant species. Without the right kind of environmental processes in place a great deal can be lost and we will all be the poorer for it.
