Wayanad - The Green Barrier

Wayanad is a beautiful and rustic district of India, sitting on the southern tip of the Deccan Plateau forming the green barrier of Kerala. Perched in the majestic Western Ghats, in the north-east region of Kerala, Wayanad boasts of rich natural surrounding and a rustic ambiance which charms tourists from all quarters. The region has quite a few beliefs behind its name, as per one belief Wayanad is the combination of two Tamil words (Vayal + Naad), Vayal meaning Paddy field and Naad meaning land thus, Wayanad literally translates into 'land of the paddy fields,, while another local belief says that Wayanad used to be formerly known as Mayakshetra (Maya’s land) which later became Mayanad to again finally change to Wayanad as it is now known as.

The local markets of Wayanad are widely renowned for their coffee, tea, cocoa, pepper, plantain and vanilla among others.
