Fashionable India
There is a wonderful history of fashion in India. Fashion goes beyond following the current trends; it’s about celebrating your individuality, expressing who you are through what you’re wearing.
Wrapped in sari
Indian women have a remarkable tradition of colorful and elegant saris. Saris are commonly worn wrapped around the waist and draped over a shoulder. There is also the lehenga choli. Choli is the closely fitted cropped top and lehenga is the skirt. Traditional clothing is worn all over the country particularly during weddings and special events. These clothes also feature in most Bollywood movies. And because of the rising popularity of Bollywood movies, the rest of the world has also grown to appreciate their beauty. Indian designers are combining modern techniques with long-established clothing styles. And what you get is an attractive mix of tradition and modernity. These modernized designs are featured in fashion shows or worn by actresses; some even found their way to Hollywood.
The foot in the Mojari
The mojari ...
... and jutti are the traditional footwear in India. These are specially handcrafted. They feature vibrant colors and unique designs. They are worn by practically everyone from royalty to the everyday person. In the past, they were decorated with gold and precious gems. But nowadays, to make them more affordable, these shoes are usually embellished with beads, gems and other things. The difference between the mojari and the jutti is that the mojari has a curled toe while the jutti has a flat front. But in some areas, they are interchangeable and can refer the same thing.
Kohl in the eye
Kohl is an eye cosmetic that has been around since the time of the pyramids. This is used to line the edges of the eyes. It is usually homemade and has a variety of recipes and ways of preparation. It is also called surma or kajal in India. It is used by both men and women. It is also popular in Africa and other Middle Eastern countries.
Bindi in the forehead
Bindi is traditionally, the red dot applied on the center of the forehead of women. Currently, it is no longer limited to red or a dot or to women. It is now, more for decoration and less about its religious or cultural significance. There are even sticker versions of the bindi with different colors and designs. It has become popular outside of India as well and has been seen on Madonna, Julia Roberts and Gwen Stefani.
Mehndi on the body
Mehndi is the non-permanent henna tattoo that is applied in India. Intricate designs are painted on the hands and feet. It is usually part of the festivities in an Indian wedding. The bride and sometimes, even the groom are decorated before the ceremony.
Indian women have a long fashion tradition. They have bright colors, elaborate designs and beautiful accessories. India fashion has been growing in popularity with the rest of the world. Women from all over are wearing Indian style dresses and using bindis.
India fashion embodies years of tradition combined with the advent of modern styles for Indian women.
