I was searching for best telecom service provider in my locality and happened to open the online website of Centurylink phone service. I was amazed to know the different calling features that were available on the phone. It is true now that we get really exciting features on our cellphones like Call Waiting, Caller-ID, conferencing, Voicemail and call rejection.

Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was the first commercial cellular phone that was able to connect to the network without a service operator. It was very huge in size and heavy and it was termed as “the Brick.” But nowadays the phones have undergone amazing developments and we have the handy cellphones that aid us in our communication. Now the phones have ventured into the next generation with the arrival of VoIP phones. Here I have listed the different types of phones that are available:

LANDLINE TELEPHONES: The landline telephones also called as traditional telephones have been used for quite a long time. They transmit and receive audio signals from point to point. It usually consists of a microphone which carries the voice of the speaker and an earphone that ...
... reproduces the audio signals from the other end. It usually has a keypad to enter the digits of the telephone number to be called and a ringer to signal an incoming call. The landline telephone is connected to the network using a pair of wires. The network is brought to a home using insulated metal wires or fiber optic cable. These wires connect the entire telephone network and the world had around 1.27 billion landline subscribers in 2008. Previously there were overhead cables and later the underground cable wires became more common.

CELLPHONES: The cellphones are the phones that are available in the present world which are not connected using insulated wire or cable. Instead they use the radio signals for transmitting voice. The cellphones are handy and are easily portable. They do not have separate microphone and earphone and they are inbuilt in the phone set. By 1990s the cellphones were used for sending text messages which we commonly term now as SMS (Short Message Service). Now the cellphones have other advanced applications other than making calls. Now you get various applications like the Organizer, Alarm, To Do List, Calculator, MP3 music, cameras, video and sound recorder on your cellphones.

SATELLITE PHONES: The satellite phones are yet another innovation to the cellular technology. The satellite phones connect through an orbiting Satellite which may cover the entire Earth or a particular region. A satellite phone can connects to any place on Earth when the satellite has the Earth’s visibility. This phone is very useful during the disaster and war times when connection to remote areas needs to be established. The submarines and ships use the satellite technology to communicate as the signal can reach even the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The first satellite phones had antennas to connect to the satellite network and they were abnormally huge in size. It weighed nearly 16 ounces and could give a talk time of only 2 hours.

SMARTPHONES AND IPHONES: The Smartphone and the IPhone have vast and varied applications with the connectivity of Internet. With the availability of Internet in phones, they are being used as mini laptops. The IPhone is powered by Apple and has similar features of a Smartphone. But the IPhone do not allow the installation of third party applications or software which is not approved by Apple. The Smart phones and IPhone have touch-screen interface which have taken over the keypad phones.

VoIP PHONES: VoIP (Voice Communication over the Internet) is the latest introduction to the phones which uses the broadband connection or Internet to transmit voice signals. This phone which was primarily used for business purposes is now readily used even at homes.
