Landlords will definitely find it tedious to maintain their property, especially when they have given it for rent. It is going to be expensive to visit the place and monitor them every now and then. Natural hazards like hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, wildfires and tornadoes are the natural disasters that attack us frequently. Next to burglary, wildfires and tornadoes are most common. So how does one protect the property from burglary and natural disasters?

•If your property has a lot of bushes or shrubs or trees, trim and maintain them. Unmaintained shrubs and bushes are great places of hide-out. Make your property visible to the neighbor’s and passer’s by.
•Keep your windows secure. Do not display any of your valuables in such a way that it is visible through the windows. Use thick curtains or drapes to cover the windows.
•Install alarms from ADT Home Security Systems or any other provider. Choose wireless alarms so that they can be carried around. Use motion sensors during night times. Motion sensors get activated when there is movement detected and the sudden change from darkness to lighting ...
... will definitely alert the inmates and scare the burglar.
•Make sure to lock the garage and storage sheds after use. Ladders and tools that are in the storage sheds would be a great help to the burglars. Plant thorny bushes and shrubs next to the windows. There are high chances for the burglar to get strangled if he tries to get in through the windows.
•Inform the neighbors and the police department if you are planning to go on a vacation. Ask them to have an eye on your property. Join neighborhood watch program and develop good and healthy relationship with the neighbors. Do not leave a message on the answering machine stating that you are on a vacation. You are inviting the burglar to your house if you do so.
•Change the front door if they are quite old. Old doors that are worn off are easy to break in. Purchase and install heavy doors with a peep hole. Upgrade the lock if you are using an old one. Do not invite strangers inside your house.
•If strangers come into your house for any kind of work like installing or repairing stand next to them. Make sure that all things are in place when they leave. Do not leave any valuables in front of them. IPod and cell phones are easy to carry away. So be extra careful about the little precious things.
•Protect your valuables and your identity. Professional thieves know the regular hiding places like inside a freezer, under the mattress, in a cookie jar or underneath the cot. So avoid these places to protect your jewelry and other valuables. Some burglars steal your identity. Protect this valuable information by using lock box or a safe.
•Replace roofs with fire-resistant materials to protect your property from fire. To protect the property from high winds use protective covers for windows and doors. Replace the old doors of garage and storage shed.
•If you are the landlord cover the property with necessary insurance policy. Provide the right value of your house. Do not under estimate the value to cut down on the monthly premiums. In case of any damage to the property for any reason, the total damage would be calculated and then the suitable compensation would be provided.

Maintenance of the property is a costly affair. Especially when the house is rented out it is going to be a difficult task. But maintaining the property is essential. Make it a point to visit your house once in six months if you have rented it out. Build healthy relationship with the renter so that the house is well maintained.
