The Basics Of Centerless Grinding Machines
Centerless grinding is a kind of a process where through the method of grinding materials are removed. It is quite like CNC grinding machines except for the fact there is no spindle attached to it. But through centerless grinding machines a substantially large number of parts can be developed in a really short span of time. In centerless grinding the main workpeice is established between the grinding and the regulating wheel that is further supported through the work blade or also known as work rest. This work blade is situated between the two wheels. The work is positioned on the work rest and this along with the regulating wheel is then pushed forward thereby allowing the work to exert force against the grinding wheel. The axial movement of the grinding wheel is enabled through slight tilt of the regulating wheel at a certain angle from horizontal. In fact, the machine is also equipped with an angular adjustment of 0 to 8 or 10 degrees.
Different types of centerless grinding machines
Ideally centerless grinding can be classified broadly into three different types and which are as follows:
Through-Feed ...
... Grinding : In this type of centerless grinding the part is made to rotate between the regulating and the grinding wheel. One or in some cases both the wheels have to be canted outside the horizontal slab and therefore this aspect ensures that horizontal velocity component is attached to the work piece. This process removes the need for outside feed mechanisms and furthermore this auto-feeding feature is helpful for quickly processing a large number of parts in quick succession.
Due to the axial movement, these through-feed parts can only work in circular cylindrical surfaces and therefore the wheel cannot be used to grind more sophisticated shapes. The main objective of through-free grinding is to create a mass-production process.
In-Feed Grinding : In feed-grinding is the second type of centerless grinding machines that is quite different from through-feed process. In this part of the process the part does not need to be fed axially therefore there is no need for the ground surface to have a right circular cylinder. The grinding wheel can be adjusted accordingly to accommodate this part and once the work blade is positioned properly, the grinding wheel can be fed in radially.
Due to the kind of time involved in setting up the complete process for each part, in-feed type of centerless grinding cannot meet the requirements of producing large number of parts as is in the case of through-feed centerless grinding.
End-Feed Grinding : In this type of centerless grinding the various parts have to move in an axial motion between the grinding wheels, then it stops for the grinding process and finally it moves out. The wheel can be adjusted to even form sophisticated shapes but the part will gradually become small in diameter.
These are the three different types of centerless grindig that can be used to produce a large number of parts and depending on the kind, shape and volume, either of the three centerless grinding processes can be used.
