Most dog owners will agree that they couldn't imagine not having a dog. From Chihuahuas to Labradors, there are many different and very diverse breeds around. This means that if you are considering owning a dog you should be able to find a breed which appeals to your lifestyle and needs.

It is a good idea to make sure you are fully prepared with the demands that a dog will place on your lifestyle. This is particularly true if you are getting a puppy or a rescue dog. It will take time for the dog to integrate into your life and get used to its new home. The more you can do to prepare for this moment, the easier it will be when the moment comes to collect the dog and bring it home for the first time.

A regular part of any dog's life – regardless of the breed you decide on – is exercise. Some dogs need more than others, based on their size and nature. Larger dogs will benefit from long walks, sometimes twice a day, so you have to be prepared to build this into your lifestyle. Smaller dogs will wear out more easily and won't cover as much distance, which could be worth bearing in mind if you don't have time for ...
... very long walks.

Food is another consideration to think about. Choose a good quality dog food such as Naturediet or something from the Hills Science Plan range. If you are in any doubt about what you should be feeding your dog and how much you should feed it, ask your vet for advice. You will also find feeding instructions on the food packets themselves, so look out for Naturediet or the Hills Science Plan range to get more information on this.

It is also worth getting insurance for your dog, as the chances are you will eventually have to get it treated for one thing or another. Sometimes a dog can be injured and sometimes it can fall ill. Some breeds can be particularly susceptible to certain illnesses as they get older, so you should watch out for these and prepare for them as much as you can. It doesn't mean your dog will suffer in such a way but you might be able to take preventative measures to reduce the chances of such an illness.

As you can see there is a lot you can do to make sure you dog continues to live a healthy and happy life. Forming a strong bond with your dog certainly helps, and many breeds respond well to this. In this sense it really does become a much loved part of the family.
