Ladakh is the land of gompas (Buddhist monasteries). The most exotic region in Jammu & Kashmir state, Ladakh is visited by a number of tourists each year because of its magnificent Buddhist monasteries also called gompas. Leh is the main town of the region and base to see famous Buddhist gompas of the regions. There are many gompas in and around this city which lure visitors. Hemis Gompa
Hemis Gompa is Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Druka Lineage located in Hemis at the distance of 45 km from Leh. It is one of the most popular and largest monasteries in the region. It is visited by a number of domestic and international tourists each year. It is famous for statue of Guru Rinpoche, magnificent courtyard and mural paintings. The great Hemis Festival is the special attraction which is celebrated with great bang of Mask Dances and music depicting the rich culture of the region.

... Gompa is a magnificent Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Yellow Hat sect. It is located at a hill at the distance of around 19 km from Leh town. It is largest gompa in central Ladakh and renowned worldwide for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Maitreya Buddha Temple, Assembly Hall, Tara Temple, Nunnery and Lamokhang Temple & quarters are featured attractions of Thiksey Gompa Complex.
Spituk Gompa
Spituk Gompa is one of the most popular attractions to visit during Leh Ladakh tours. It is located at the distance of around 8 km from Leh town. The gompa is noted for having about 100 monks. Gustor Festival is celebrated here every year.
Sankar Gompa
Sankar Gompa is a famous Buddhist monastery within the city of Leh. There is a grand statue of Avalokiteshvara (The Buddhist deity of compassion) who is depicted with 1,000 heads and 1,000 arms (all holding weapons).
Namgyal Tsemo Gompa
Namgyal Tsemo Monastery is one of the most famous monasteries in Ladakh. It is located in Leh district and visited by a number of tourists each year. The monastery has a three-storey high gold statue of Maitreya Buddha and ancient manuscripts and frescoes.
