‘Sakhar Puda’:
The first pre-marriage Marathi rituals are the ‘Sakhar Puda’: The bride is presented with gifts and a packet of sugar. This is considered as an informal engagement.

‘Wang Nischay’in Marathi rituals:
The formal engagement ceremony is known as the ‘Wang Nischay’. It consists of a small puja of kul-devta, followed by a meal. It is performed at both the bride’s house and the groom’s house.

‘Haldi chadawat ritual’:
Turmeric paste, spread over mango leaves being is applied to the whole body of the bride and the groom at their respective homes. The applying starts from the feet and then moves upward.

Ganesh puja:

‘Vivah Homa’:
The groom performs the vivah homa ritual with help from the priest followed by the ‘Kanyadann ritual’.

Mangalsutra Daan:
The groom ties mangalsutra around the bride’s neck and applies vermilion in her hair parting. In turn, the bride applies sandalwood to the groom’s forehead. The next major ritual is the saptapadhi ritual where the couple circles the sacred ceremonial fire seven times, taking seven vows.

Karmasampati ritual:
The final Marathi ritual of marriage is the karmasampati ritual, where the couple and the bride’s father please the Gods and pray for blessings to the newlywed couple.

Grihapravesh:
The first Marathi rituals which is performed after the marriage, is the grihapravesh. The mother of the groom welcomes the couple at the doorstep of the groom’s house. She washes their feet with milk and water. Then a traditional Arati is performed. After that, the bride enters her new home by turning over a pot or vessel of rice, with her right foot.

The final ritual or custom of the wedding is the reception party. The party is organized in the evening of the marriage day. Guests are treated to a lavish spread of food. They are served with sweets by the newly wedded couple.
