An Inspiring Journey To Leh - Among Mountains Galore
Leh is a city of tremendous beauty that’s surrounded by the mighty Himalayas. Stretching along the Indus valley, it was once an advantageous trading spot and continued to be so for many centuries, as goods like charas, silk yarn, grain, salt, and cashmere wool were traded. Since the 8th century, Ladakh has been home to unique and colorful cultures and different religions, especially Buddhism and Islam. Situated at an altitude of 3500 m, it lures tourists from all places.
The Must Visit Sites in Leh
The magnetic hill or gravity hill is an interesting attraction in Leh. It is said to have magnetic properties that are strong enough to pull travelling cars and aeroplanes towards it. Because of its magnetic power, it is considered to be a wonder by the local people.
Another breath-taking attraction is the Pangong Tso lake, which is situated at a height of 4350 m. It is a breeding ground for many migratory birds, and visitors can see many gulls and ducks on and over the surface of the lake. It is also known as the ‘Lake of the Great Hollow’ ...
... and is considered to be the largest lake in Asia. The water in this lake is salty, but surprisingly clear. Locals believe that the water must have been pure during ancient times.
The lake shines with different shades of green and blue depending on the depth of the spot, the sunlight, and the shadow cast by the mountain. During winter, the lake freezes and a variety of animals walk on the same.
The Ladakhi villagers also celebrate a festival of ice skating, decked in their colourful necklaces, clothes, and beads, and this is a sight to behold for all tourists.
What to See and Do
Nubra Valley, also known as the ‘Valley of Flowers’, has some attractions of its own. The Samstanling Monastery, known for its hot springs, and Ensa Gompa, known for its rock engravings and Buddhist murals, are two must-visit spots. The Pashmina shawl is a popular souvenir for visitors of Nubra valley.
Soaring about two hundred feet above the Leh Palace, the Victory Tower is situated at the peak of Namgyal hill. It was built to celebrate the victory of Ladakh over Balti Kashmir in the 16th century.
Shopping in Leh ladakh is an experience in itself. There are a number of jewellery shops which are must-see sites for tourists. Corals and turquoise are the most famous stones in Ladakh. There are also shops that sell Pashmina shawls, carpets, handicrafts, and also souvenirs like tea and chang vessels, knitted carpets, cups, semi precious stones and the expensive pirakh. Pirakh is a woman’s traditional headdress.
Leh has now been added to the list of 100 most endangered sites due to the harsh changes in the climatic pattern and other reasons. Ladakh tours are ideal for all cultural enthusiasts, thanks to the diverse options provided.
