Mirena intrauterine contraceptive or IUDs is counted amongst the most common types of intrauterine devices available. Such a device needs to be placed by an experienced gynecologist or medical doctor. The device is fitted right into the uterus for a particular period of time. After the particular period of time, the device needs to be changed.

Mirena is a different device altogether, however it is found to be more efficient and effective than the general intrauterine contraceptive devices. And help avoid many different side effects that make it a choice of many women around the world.

For those women who are looking for a stress free choice of conception can consider Mirena. This T- shaped device contains a small storage system of hormone also known as levonorgestrel. The hormone is especially used in the contraceptive pills like Ovran 30, Eugynon, Ovranette, Microgynon, Logynon etc. While contraceptive pills usually comes in strength of 1/7th hormone, in Mirena the dose is much less compared to the hormone based contraception or contraceptive pills.

When you take hormone contraceptive pills it usually goes ...
... directly to the lining of the womb and rather through blood stream where it can lead to several common progesterone side effects. Though the intrauterine device was developed originally as a contraceptive, the discovery of the same has lead to much lighter periods which is considered as a plus. Most gynecologists even suggest Mirena as an effective treatment for curing the heavier periods especially when the pill treatment fail to provide the desirable results.

Before the intrauterine device is placed, the doctor usually conducts an examination in order to make sure that the woman has the normal womb and there is nothing unusual. Infections, discharge and swabs are taken into account in order to rule out any such possibility of infection when it is placed. The intrauterine device is inserted within a week of the start of period. This assists in reducing the chances of irregular bleeding and expulsion. It can be instantly inserted after the surgical execution of pregnancy, however must be delayed until six weeks after the delivery of baby.

Just like in any other smear test, a speculum is placed in the uterus and the Mirena is then placed into the womb through cervix. As it contains storage of hormone, the stem is found to be slightly wider than normal intrauterine devices. This can even lead to occasional difficulties with fitting especially if you have not had a baby before.

Local anesthetic can be used to provide helpful results. It must be fitted by someone who is trained and also has an experience in fitting the intrauterine device. It is a great idea to take some pain killers few hours before fitting it to reduce the discomfort. But once it is placed, you won’t be able to feel any pain. Your doctor will instruct you how to check for the strings that come attached with the device. If required you must go for a check up and see whether the strings can be seen.
