Johannesburg, located in the African province of Gauteng, is one of the most important cities in South Africa. It is ranked in the 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world & also happens to be the seat of the Constitutional Court. It is the entry point into Africa for tourists heading to a number of cities & attractions in the neighboring area of Johannesburg. So if you’re planning a visit to South Africa, there are a number of things within Johannesburg, as well as around, which you should definitely not miss. Apartheid Museum Don’t let the name mislead you, this is one of the greatest museums in South Africa that has a lot of remnants from South Africa’s troubled times, & of course the 20th century apartheid. The highlight attraction in the museum is the “Hall of Nooses” which commemorates all the different people hung for treason back in the day.

The displays in the museum might seem a bit too grim to a lot of people. But at the end of the day, it is a rather uplifting feeling to have seen the journey of a country through countless political problems to becoming a multiracial democracy. Constitution ...

Once you’ve been to Apartheid Museum, it’s hard not to go take a look at the Constitution Hill. It is another testament to the development of South Africa as a nation fraught with political issues to a nation that breeds multiculturalism. Originally, the site of a fort then turned into a prison, now it is the seat of the Constitutional Court. The building is open to the public, who attend mostly to view the art gallery of more than 200 artworks housed in the court atrium. Located in an original gold mine, even the staff wear old miner’s garb & everything in the park is a built to reflect the architecture of that time. Within the park is a museum, based on gold mining & all its little details.Nelson Mandela Square Originally called the Sandton Square, it is a shopping center in the Sandton district of Johannesburg. The name was changed after a statue of Nelson Mandela was put up on 31st March, 2004, in the square to commemorate him & his efforts for the country So if you’re in Johannesburg for a vacation, do not miss these places, among others. These are the heart & soul of Johannesburg & will tell you not only the story of the city but of a country that went from apartheid to the colorful nation it is today.
