There are several documented benefits of whey protein that make it an invaluable nutrition source not just for athletes, but anyone interested in developing muscle mass and achieving a lean and ripped physique.

Whey protein supplements come in three forms: whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and whey protein hydrosylate. Of these, whey protein isolate is the purest, with 90% protein and very little fat and lactose. It is especially recommended for adults who are lactose intolerant.

Here are some details about the benefits associated with whey protein:

• Whey protein has the best Biological Value (BV) of all proteins. BV is a measure that determines how much protein the body can absorb per gram consumed. Whey protein also has an excellent protein efficiency ratio.
• Whey protein provides all the essential amino acids. Further, the combination of amino acids in whey protein is just the proportion your muscles need in order to repair and build. This is perhaps the most valuable benefit of whey protein.
• Whey protein is the richest natural source of Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA). ...
... BCAAs are essential for every kind of workout routine. They are metabolized directly into the muscle tissue, unlike other amino acids, which are metabolized in the liver. During a workout, the body draws on BCAAs to process them into glucose to provide energy. If your body has a shortage of BCAAs, the body will start breaking down your precious muscle tissue for energy. This is extremely undesirable. So, you can see just how valuable BCAAs are.
• Whey protein is also a very rich source of the essential amino acid, leucine. Leucine is one of the most important amino acids for athletes, as it directly affects muscle protein synthesis and muscle growth. Other protein sources, however, are not so rich in leucine.
• Another benefit of whey protein is that it is easy to digest and gets absorbed into the body very efficiently. It is known as a ‘fast’ protein since it starts providing nourishment to the muscles very soon after consumption.
• Whey protein improves the condition of your immune system. It is a rich source of glutathione. Glutathione is an anti-oxidant that is necessary for a healthy immune system. Heavy exercise may reduce glutathione levels in your body, but these are replenished and maintained with whey protein.

It is even better when you consider that whey protein, even though it is widely available in supplement form, is a completely natural product. Apart from all the benefits associated with it, there is also the heartening fact that it has absolutely no side effects. In fact, you can add this on to the list of whey protein benefits!

The only thing you need to be cautious about is the amount you consume. Anything consumed in excess will begin to harm your system. With whey protein, excess consumption can put extra pressure on your liver, and in extreme cases, even lead to liver problems. Apart from this, there is only one final word of advice: if you are lactose intolerant, go for whey protein isolate instead of whey protein concentrate. Isolate has less than 1% lactose and can easily be absorbed by anyone.
