The Role Played By Fixed Services Satellite (fss) And Digital Broadcast Satellite (dbs) In Satellite

The world of wireless and satellite communication was brought to life by a satellite technologies called as the Fixed Service Satellite (FSS) and Digital Broadcast Satellite (DBS). These satellite technologies provide the basic principles for today’s digital broadcasting and data communications services. These types of satellite technologies are used for broadcasting feeds for television stations and radio stations, as well as other broadcast networks. Fixed Service Satellites are primarily used by North American communication service companies.
Since the late 1970s, Fixed Services Satellite has been used for providing Direct-To-Home (DTH) services in North America. Since 1994, the Fixed Services Satellite technologies were gradually replaced by direct broadcast satellite (DBS) television systems. In North America, FSS satellites are used to relay channels of cable TV networks from originating studios to local cable hubs, and from there to the operation centers. Fixed Services Satellites were the first geosynchronous communications satellites launched in space, and they operate in either the C band or the Ku bands. ...
... Their operating frequencies are based on the country of operation, for example, they have different operating frequencies differ in Europe when compared to that of the United States.
Most communication service providers in North America use FSS and DBS technologies to provide communication services. Off late, the FSS satellite technology has been usurped by the DBS technology. For example, CenturyLink, one of the major communication service providers in the United States, relies on Fixed Services Satellite and Direct Broadcast Satellite technologies to provide telecommunication and TV services to its customers. It offers bundled services, which includes Internet, TV, and digital phone, under the CenturyLink Bundles brand name.
In order to receive the television channels and other feeds from FSS satellites, a specialized system is required in the name of TVRO (Television Receive Only) systems. These systems enable the communication providers to continually receive the feeds from the FSS satellites and then transmit the same to the regional communication hubs. Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) systems are used for receiving satellite television broadcasts in home. This has distinguished the transmissions intended for home viewers from cable television distribution services.
Most FSS and DBS services are charged by the respective communication service provider, but there are also free-to-air (FTA) channels using DBS technologies. In North America alone, there are over 80 FTA digital channels available. Some of the famous FTA satellites in North America are AMC-4, AMC-6, Galaxy 18, Satmex 5, and Galaxy 19. Germany is the only country which has about 200 digital FTA channels, which includes about 18 HDTV channels along with other regional channels. It would be right to say that today’s world of satellite communications and related services would not have been reality without the invention of highly reliable communication technologies such as the Fixed Services Satellite (FSS) and the Digital Broadcast Satellite (DBS).
