How Culture Has Now Given Candles Meaning Yet Again
Candles have often been relegated to the emergency plans whenever the power goes out. This has often happened due to the fact that some stalls make their outstanding sales during power black outs. It may not be a wonder if the stall owners sometimes long for a slight power outage, especially when the business is low.
Candles have often been relegated to the emergency plans whenever the power goes out. This has often happened due to the fact that some stalls make their outstanding sales during power black outs. It may not be a wonder if the stall owners sometimes long for a slight power outage, especially when the business is low.
However, the use of candles has significantly changed in the recent past. If candle had activist groups, then this would be a significant breakthrough in their campaigns. Before the power outage eras, a candle had a substantial and significant role. A candle would be mounted and used for time keeping as early as 200BC. The pillar candles would be mounted on long nails or metal bar, with precise calibrations ...
... on them. The calibrations indicated time intervals. As the wax melted away, periods of time would be noted. This worked well indoors, at night and during cloudy days. In fact, there is a whole Chinese dynasty that relied on this method for time keeping.
As fate would have it, with more inventions coming along in the revolution ages, candles were deemed irrelevant for timekeeping. In fact, they could no longer be used as the major source of light during at night or dark seasons. This almost made the once most needed time keepers, fully obsolete in these ages. However, they now are more useful than before.
Whether scented or unscented, stalk or long; they have many roles now. One of them is religious purposes. Candles are often used by some religions, to portray a new sense of divinity or spirituality. In fact, there are rituals where they have to be lit always. The candles are well arranged at the altars, to harness that spiritual aspect. In Christian worship, they are used as a representation of the light of Christ. They can also be lit during prayers. When someone offers a candle to the priests, this is usually a representation of one offering himself to God.
Wedding candles are also used to represent unity especially during ceremonies. The candles use in Christianity is mostly borrowed from Judaism of which the candles are used in many festivals. In Buddhism, a candle is lit in honor of Budha and his teachings. This represents a sense of respect. Despite the fact that they are used here in these religions, candles are also used in sorcery and Satanism. They invoke various powers during Satan worship.
However, the candles do not always represent religious and spiritual views. They are sometimes used for decorative purposes, for example, wedding candles arranged beautifully to create such a lovely ambience. Pillar candles are mounted well sometimes in cylinder vases and scented with an appealing perfume. They change the whole mood of a place. They can also be used as mosquito repellants and for therapeutic purposes in remove excess ear wax. Hence, when you get a candle, remember how obsolete the society almost once made it. Yes, and culture has now given candles meaning yet again.
