Google launched the Penguin Update on April 24, 2012 to combat webspam and websites violating Google’s quality guidelines. According to Business News Daily, Google accounts for 66% of market share in the online search industry. The impact of the Penguin Update has been immediate had a major effect on the PA SEO market. SEO professionals have voiced their concerns and the Penguin Update has been described as disproportionate. Although this algorithm targets only about 3% of search queries, it focuses on web content that Google believes is usually associated with spam.
Since the movement of information across the internet runs at the speed of lightening, big businesses are readily spending money to remain at the top of search rankings. However smaller businesses do not have this advantage in the PA SEO market since they lack the funding and often contract their SEO services with outside vendors. However PA SEO professionals are aware that now SEO techniques have been split into two categories; white hat SEO and black hat SEO. White hat SEO professionals abide by Google’s quality guidelines and do not contribute to the influx of webspam and website malware that agitate so many internet users. However black hat SEO professionals manipulate online content and gain better rankings by keyword stuffing, linking schemes, deceiving redirects, and duplicating content.
White hat SEO professionals agree that the black hat SEO tactics are unfair and causing a lot of problems with search engine rankings. However like internet related this is difficult to try to manage and supervise. Although using Chrome software can block certain websites from popping up in search results, the legitimate sites, the Penguin Update is disproportionately affecting those in the web service industry. PA SEO professionals should focus on small businesses that rely their web presence. New strategic marketing initiatives will need to be implemented because as many have noticed, the Penguin Update has decreased webspam and hijacked websites but has not improved search engine quality.
Determining what is spam or viral content is not an easy task in the vast field of information across the internet. Like Google, PA SEO professionals should inform their target audiences of trusted content they can access. Although Google wants to try and classify data by implementing algorithms like the Penguin Update and the Panda 3.5, it is impossible to catch and trace all instances of black hat SEO techniques. The Penguin Update has complicated search engine visibility for many businesses and the PA SEO market will need to adapt to its impact. As the issue of SEO develops and evolves, PA SEO professionals can help and aid businesses so that they can maintain a strong internet connection with their target audience and customers.
