The Call For E-cigarettes Being Regulated
Most e-cigarette brands that are available in the UK lack inspection and control while they're imported from other countries. They don't contain tobacco and are hence, not regulated by Tobacco Product Regulations. Since they're not classified under medical devices, they can't be regulated in the same manner as other products that replace nicotine.
The Royal College of Physicians Advisory Group's chairman, Prof. John Britton said that the regulation of electronic cigarettes would ensure that a "guaranteed standard" was met for consumers. He stated that though they have the potential to save millions of lives, the fact that they're not regulated is bad as people are open to using unsafe and unclean products.
He went on to say that the concept of replacing nicotine was good and powerful, but e cigs were challenging this system. They are unregulated and new, but regulation would help a great deal and it would help in cleaning up the loopholes. He added that e cigarettes are positive, and millions of lives could be saved if smokers switched to them. He also reiterated the need for regulation.
"Regulations ...
... will help the industry grow"
One of the biggest brands in Scotland is estimated to have replaced around 24,000,000 tobacco cigarettes in the UK last year. A spokeswoman stated that tighter regulations would be welcome on electronic cigarette products as it would help the industry grow by allowing only the best and safest products to be distributed. Most Scottish e-cig companies' products have been evaluated by the Edinburgh Scientific Services and they also work with top quality standard associations.
The working mechanism of an e-cig
Generally, an electronic cigarette contains a battery, a vaporiser with electronic circuitry, a nicotine cartridge, and sensors. Based on the brand, an e-cigarette cartridge may contain between 0 and 16 mg of nicotine. It may also contain supplementary chemicals which include various flavourings, water and propylene glycol.
When you inhale, the cartridge gets heated and a fine mist containing around twenty ingredients is produced. The mist is consumed by the lungs, and some colourless vapour is discharged into the air as you exhale.
Since these products are very beneficial for people who want to quit smoking, their regulation seems to be in demand. Most people are concerned about the issues these products may have on their health. However, they aren't as dangerous and help in quitting smoking effectively. If e cigarettes are to be regulated, people will be much more comfortable using them, and millions of lives could be saved from the dangers of tobacco.
