Translators
A translator is someone who reads something in one language, and rewrites or restates what they read in to another language. A translator may also specialize, such as in the field of legal translation.
Legal translation is defined as: “the translation of texts within the field of law” . It involves the painstaking process of sifting through all types of legal documents including, but not limited to: contracts, complaints, summonses, evidentiary papers, and real estate transactions. Legal translation requires specialized training where the translator has a solid grasp of legal terminology as well as common and civil law, and the legal system itself. Legal translation must be done carefully, as one wrong word can change the meaning of the document and could have disastrous consequences.
Other types of translations include:
Administrative translation – This involves the translation of commonly used texts within business organizations, which may be used in the day to day management.
Literary translation – The field of literary translation involves the translation of literature such as novels, ...
... poems, plays and poems.
Medical translation – This is a highly specialized field, as any errors or omissions can have dire results. Medical translation can cover everything from medication packaging to medical manuals.
Transcription is another form of translation and most commonly involves turning speech into written language, though there are other definitions as well. The three main types of transcription are:
Verbatim Transcriptions – These are incredibly in depth transcriptions that record not only every word spoken, but also any other noises such as coughing, sighing, any interjections or shifts in process with the use of ah, um, uh, er, etc. These are most often required by psychologists, university research programs, or for qualitative evidence for legal reasons.
Word-for-word Transcriptions – Word for word is just as it suggests, each word is transcribed, but all other noises, inflexions, etc are omitted.
General and Grammatically Correct Transcriptions – Here all words are transcribed, additional sounds omitted, and any grammatical errors corrected.
In the case of audio transcription it may come in handy for use in such situations as business meetings, conferences, seminars, interviews, focus groups, podcasts, and radio shows. Medical transcription is the most common type where transcribers turn voice recorded reports from medical professionals into text format.
Translators and transcribers play an important role today. With global accessibility, and digital processing, we are working more and more to work within a world where we may be far apart, but can be brought closer together.
