What Is A Sit-down Hydrofoil?
A sit-down hydrofoil is a type of water ski product. It is typically towed behind a watercraft that has both a spotter and a driver. The seat comes with safety straps and bindings for the rider. You will start in deep water while keeping the tip of the board out of the water. Once the board starts to plane you need to lean forward in order to keep the hydrofoil from leaving the water. You can steer the hydrofoil by moving your knees to point in the direction you want to go and leaning back allows you to jump out of the water.
A sit-down hydrofoil is an excellent option for those who want a water sport for rough water. This is because a hydrofoil allows the rider to sit above the waves. In fact, a sit-down hydrofoil is only limited by the speed of the boat you are attached to. If water is too rough then the boat can go fast enough to allow the foil to rise above the waves.
The ease of riding is another benefit to the sit-down hydrofoil. You need a lot less strength to ride a hydrofoil than you do a waterski or wakeboard. There is less friction on the riding surface because the hydrofoil actually rides ...
... beneath the water. Hydrofoiling is a truly fun water sport that offers benefits to individuals of all expertise levels. To better understand this sport you need to know the three basic components of the sit-down hydrofoil.
The first component of a sit-down hydrofoil is the seat tower. This is where the participant will sit. These are usually made of aluminum and can be found either with or without a shock. They are typically referred to as "Shock Towers" or "Rock Towers". A safety belt prevents the rider from being released from the seat while riding.
The next component is the board which is usually composed of fiberglass or carbon resin. Safety straps in the form of two bindings keep the rider's feet from coming off the board. The bindings can often be adjusted both up and down the board for those who have different leg lengths.
Finally there is the foil assembly, which has three major parts. There is the strut or fuselage, which is the rudder that guides the rider in the direction they want to go by turning their knees or body. The front wing gives the rider life and allows them to rise or jump off the water surface. Then there is the rear wing, which helps to stabilize or counterbalance the lift coming from the front wing.
Today the sit-down hydrofoil comes in many different kinds of configurations, all of them have different reactions when in the water. Most are made from either cast or billet aluminum. You should try renting different configurations to get a feel for how each one rides in the water before making a purchasing decision. This way you will get a sit-down hydrofoil that is easy to use and meets your water sport needs.
