Modems are an integral part of any communication systems especially the cable TV. Without the modem there is no way your computer or the television in your home can receive signals, process and display images. Modems come in many different types and the choice will largely depend upon the cable TV operators specifications. Even a slight difference in the specification can mean poor quality of reception or even a blank display. Besides, the possibilities of damages to your equipment are also very real. Cable TV companies like Time Warner Cable, for example, like other cable companies have their own specifications. Generally when you order services from them they will give you the modem. But some companies give you the option to buy your own modem with all the bells and whistles.

Buying the right kind of modem requires some expertise. If you already have one from a previous cable service it should be possible for you to use it rather than go in for a rented or new purchase. The first thing you need to do is see if the specifications in the old modem matches the ones given by your new operator. If you had used the older ...
... modem in a different country and had just relocated to the US then you will have to take additional precautions with electric supply specifications. In some countries the standard electric supply is 220 and above voltages, with various cycles. So see to that the voltage and cycle match with US supplies. Some equipment manufacturers make a provision in the modem to take care of that, but you need assure yourself.

There are two ways in which you can requisition a modem. The first and the easiest way of course is to be satisfied with what the operator has supplied you and that includes the limited features and the extended ones if they have any. More commonly they are called rented modems, and the advantages are that you don’t have to bother about replacements or maintenance. Should the equipment malfunction, operators will readily replace it with a working modem and things will go on smoothly thereafter. The downside is you cannot expect every feature to be in there. On the other hand self acquired modems can have special features that can give you richer experiences. But they can also cost you a lot of money, and the upside is some of them will let you connect dozens of computers and televisions at the same time. Some of them are even wireless capable and will save you dollars on cables.

One of the most of features in modems is the wireless capability. Running wires all over the home is a messy affair for most home cable users. But then they are also less prone to unstable signal strength, a factor that is considered as very important when it comes to internet services. Wireless modems, doubtlessly, is convenient to use but then signal strength is a contentious issue all the time. Even walls and partitions can give you substandard signal strength making it unfit for high speed internet service. Then there is the security issue with wireless equipment. In fact however strong step you may take to make you wireless system secure an ingenious hacker from out our home can break into your network which don’t forget.

Modems are expensive devices that you don’t buy very often. Typically they will give you 5 or more years of service even under very trying conditions. There aren’t even any parts inside that you can service, and if at all you give it to a service engineer the cost of servicing will be so high that a replacement will be much cheaper. So the final word of advice is look more closely at the warranty the manufacturer will give you, the longer the better.
