Choosing a good cigar is a matter of selection, price, and personal taste. Although many cigar aficionados have strong opinions about what makes a good Cigars, in the final analysis it is the individual's taste and preference that is most important.

The good news is that there is a very simple metric of a cigar's basic level of quality: the price. If a cigar is cheap, it is extremely unlikely to be a high quality cigar. While it is not necessary to spend huge sums of money on a good cigar, in general the pricier the cigar, the higher the level of quality.

One thing to look for is the nationality of the cigar's point of origin. This can give you guidance as to the taste to be expected from the Cigar. Cuban cigars tend to be very strong in flavor, with a rich taste and a complex aroma. (Note that Cuban cigars which are hand-rolled are always "nude" - no plastic wrapper. If a Cuban cigar has a plastic wrapper, it is machine-made and of much lower quality. In general, you will always want to avoid machine-wrapped cigars, which are purely for the mass market ...
... and will never be of high quality.) Dominican cigars tend to be softer and sweeter than Cubans, with pleasing floral and chocolate notes in the aroma. Dominicans are a very good choice for a new cigar smoker. Brazilian and Nicaraguan cigars tend to be similarly rich and bright in taste to Cubans. Honduran, Mexican, and American cigars tend to be milder in taste, with a mellower aroma and finish.

The color of a cigar is another good indicator of its taste. As a general rule, the darker the leaf, the sweeter, spicier, and stronger the flavor will be. The basic classifications of cigar colors are double Claro, Claro, natural, Colorado Claro, Maduro, and Oscuro. Double Claro is a light cigar, usually not aged very much, with a greenish tint to the wrapper. Claros are usually mild and light brown in color. Naturals are light brown to brown, with a very smooth smoke and full-bodied flavor. Colorado Claro is slightly stronger than Claro, but still very mild. Maduros are dark brown and have a rich aroma, and are medium in strength. Oscuro is a very dark brown, almost black, and has a very strong flavor.

Finally, the length of the Cigar indicates how long it will take to smoke it; for many smokers, a short strong cigar is preferable to a long, mild one (or vice versa). As you gain experience with smoking quality cigars, you will find the flavor, strength and length that is best suited to your personal taste. Enjoy!
