Are you in the process of renovating your home, or thinking about renovation for selling purposes? If you’re planning on selling your house, either through an agent or in a for sale by owner capacity and you’re thinking of home renovating, then there are several very common mistakes that you should become educated about so that you can avoid making them. Read on to find out about the most common mistakes homeowners make when renovating their house in order to put it on the market.

1. Trying to be as trendy as possible
It might seem like a great idea right this second, but trying to be as up-to-the-minute stylistically when you’re performing home renovations is simply not a terrific thing to do. Think of it this way—the trendier your renovation is, the more out-of-style it’s going to be in five or ten years. So “no thanks” to fads like vessel sinks, glass tiles, and wire-hung track lighting. Instead, opt for classic alterations that match your home’s original style.

2. Skipping the planning stage
Improvisation may be loads of fun at a comedy club, ...
... but it’s a big no-no when it comes to home renovation. Whatever you do, don’t skip the planning stage of home renovation. Read up on home renovation and learn about what others have done that led to success—and what renovations did not lead to successful outcomes. Do your homework to find out where you can get the best deals on supplies and building materials as well as which contractors in your town are the most-trusted and have the best reputation.

3. Rushing
You want to have sold your house yesterday, so you may think that you have to rush, rush, rush to get your home renovations done. This is not the case and will most likely end up badly for you. Sure, you’re excited about the renovations you have planned, but be sure to take the time to plan and research your project before jumping in and beginning the renovations.

These are the top three mistakes that homeowners make when renovating a home for selling purposes. What other mistakes can you think of?
