Trivandrum is an ancient city. It was a part of the Spice Trade Route, and had connections with other prominent ancient trading centers of the world. Trivandrum is now referred to as Thiruvananthapuram, which is its original name. The name is derived from the Deity of the Padmanabhaswamy Temple in the city. The deity is Anantha Padmanabhan. The city is thus referred to as Thiruvananthapuram or the Land of Lord Ananthapadmanabha. This Temple is the most prominent landmark of the city and is also a huge pilgrimage center.

The city is located on a series of low lying hills near the coastal line. It is bordered by the Arabian Sea on the West and the Western Ghats on the East. With a prominent coastline, Trivandrum has many beaches and backwater destinations. Other places to visit include Sanghumukham beach, Kovalam beach, Agasthyarkoodam peak, Napier Museum and Zoo, Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kuthira Mallika Palace and Neyyar Dam.
