The Use Of Infrared Thermography For Missiles
Each and every object is composed of continually vibrating atoms, and as the energy or the temperature of the object increases this vibration increases too. This created electromagnetic waves, which reflects as spectral radiant energy. This results into all object continuously emitting heat waves, in some or the other form. This is also known as infrared radiation. In simple words, the thermal imaging refers to the heat based waves, which helps identify objects in little or no light.
The infrared technology dates back around 200 years, when William Herschel first built the crude monochromator. Now, two centuries later, it this technology is used for most devices that we see around us. Infrared radiations are usually connected with night vision or predictive maintenance.
However, there are many other arenas wherein this infrared thermography ...
... is extremely vital, one of them is law enforcement. They are used especially in wars and rescue measure, to help view better in smoke, dust and even darkness. One of the areas wherein the infrared process is used the most is for systems for recognition and surveillance, tank sight systems, anti-tank missiles, air-air missiles. This article will elaborate how infrared helps in enhancing air-air missiles.
Missiles were used earlier too; however, the origin of the IR guided missiles was during the Second World War and has been consistently used since. Infrared detectors of these times had poor sensitivity, so usually these missiles only could track the hot exhaust pipes of an aircraft. Additionally, they did not function well in a cloudy sky heavy rain or fog.
The modern missiles, however, work with the infrared homing that is the thermal image camera or sensor is used to passively guide the missiles towards the target. It works on the electromagnetic radiations that are emitted from the object, and tracks it accordingly. Also known as heat-seekers, these missiles follow the heat on the skin on the aircraft or any other material, created by sunlight or any other source of light, even, slightly friction of the air.
Often these missiles can be misled by dropping heated fare guns from the plane. But, the new technology has specialized imagers that and distinguish between the flares and the actual plane. It acts like an extended eye for the pilot.
Using the IR technology along with UV capture, motion detection and other methods, will help accurately guide the missile to the target. For handheld missile launcher and the tanks, specialized infrared viewer can be used.
