Most people today have a mobile device of one kind or another, but tomorrow they will be integrated into most aspects of our lives. Smartphones have come a long way, but few people truly understand what the technology behind them will mean to the future. Over the years technology fabrication has become smaller and smaller, and this allows for faster technology that uses less energy than the product before it. Along with this has come integration of necessary components into a single chip, and with this comes complex technology never possible before.

Computers were just computers until smartphones became so popular that new technologies were developed to help meet demand. These devices before were simply miniaturized computers that had separate chips to perform complex operations and provide a link between everything, just like regular computers do. One of the first steps towards eliminating this complex series of operations was to simply integrate the video card into the processor. One of the interesting things that have happened along with integrating things together is the ability to replace those components with specialty processors. Instead of the sound card just simply being integrated, it is then replaced by a sound processor that enhances sound quality in different ways or provides a robust headphone amplifier. Although the technology is still a ways off, the idea of integrating complex microprocessors into devices like sunglasses or even gloves is currently being worked on and tested out by multiple companies.

Along with advancing technologies on the internal components have also come improvements on the exterior. With the popularity of thin smartphones drastically rising, manufacturers have looked to brand new technologies to make their phones more robust than ever before. One of the newest things that have been widely used among the newest smartphones is micro arc oxidation, which shocks the metal after manufacturing to give it a unique texture and strength. Samsung has also been playing with screen technology that allows it to flex drastically, but with the oddness of the technology, consumer goods that utilize it are likely far off in the future. Even case technology has improved, and Shades iPod cases are thin but protect phones just as well as bulkier cases.
