In order to ensure a fast and effective method of communication, companies outfit their servers with the latest SFP transceivers on the market, which can range from the hundreds to the thousands. Most tend to call up a reseller, order the devices and plug them into the servers to interface the motherboards to the communication networks. Rather than calling a merchant or visiting a random reseller, you should review your purchasing process to see where you can save money on alternative modules other than the OEM or get used items to cut the costs.

Compatible Alternative

Owners normally want to buy a replacement SFP or a new one from a brand name OEM website, which is fine, but the cost of the device tends to be a bit bigger, while a substitute can cost 50-100 dollars less. The alternative SFP modules help save a ton of money, and since they do everything the OEM can, why wouldn’t you want to buy these products?

It’s better for you to buy from a cheaper manufacturer that creates the same device than continue to shell out 50, 60, even 100 dollars extra for an SFP that functions the same.

Buy Used

When ...
... individuals hear the word “used,” some tend to think as if they’re getting a lesser quality product because it had a past owner, but don’t buy into this common misconception. Say you end up buying a Cisco compatible GLC-T; that does not mean the item is inferior to a new module, especially since Cisco makes reliable transceivers that come with the satisfaction of a long shelf life. Sure, ordering a used item may seem like a huge risk, but with most vendors offering customers a warranty and a discounted rate on these modules, it seems very hard to turn down a refurbished module.

Buy a Warranty

Okay, so the topic of the article is to help people discover ways to save money on devices, but a warranty is an investment that later down the road will pay off large dividends to the investor. Say you buy brand new Cisco compatible SFP modules for your servers but one of them malfunctions after a year because of some dust in the lens.

You’ve had the product for some years now, so the warranty from the manufacturer is done with, and now you’re about to be out 300-400 dollars for a replacement. The extra warranty you would have paid for would have covered 3 or 4 years and saved you the hassle of having to purchase all new equipment. A warranty is a “just in case”, but it’s better to have one with you than to have to spend an extra three to four hundred dollars on replacements.
