The Balancing Extremes (this Or That): The Two Sides Of Normal
I’m not a very social kind of person; I have a limited number of people who I consider special. I don’t socialize much either. I spend very little time talking to people and strangers. I prefer doing all the talking inside my head. Oh no, that’s not something to fear for. I just like holding monologues with myself when I’m alone, that’s all. But you get what I mean. Not that I have a frigid personality or anything. I smile occasionally. The thing is I’m the kind of person the society terms an introvert. That doesn’t mean that I’m socially disadvantaged. I spend my time observing people, characterizing them and sorting through the stereotypes.
Being the only child, I’ve spent years reading people and their behavior, I think I can say that I’ve become kind of good at it. People call me an ambivert, the sort that is 50% shy and 50% outgoing. But the few close friends that I have are all extroverts. They love being the centre of attention. They are the life of any party. They love drawing attention to themselves. They can come out of any socially distressing situation. And typically, they are never alone. ...
... To explain the term ambivert, I can use myself as an example.
I don’t like drawing attention to myself. I like to remain in the shadows. I’m very choosy when it comes to making friends. I don’t make friends unless necessary. I have some weird hobbies. I love reading books. I’m not a fan of crowded places and neither am I a frequent party-goer. I talk only when it’s required. I don’t talk to strangers at all, unless I discover that we have something in common. I like my family, I like spending my time at home. If I’m invited out during a Friday night to a dance club, I decline. I’d rather watch a re-run of Friends or some On Demand title. I don’t like renting a DVD, I don’t prefer spending too much money. I’d rather buy movies at discounted prices through Charter deals.
Ambiverts are in a sense, a unique species. Some make friends really fast, they lie on this side of normal. Yet a few others struggle to make friends, but once they do, they keep them for life. Controversially, some others are irritated by the presence of peers or colleagues. They prefer to work alone, but they probably don’t like to spend all their time alone. Ambiverts such as me hate crowded places. But there are others who fit to the same category but hate being in lonely, secluded areas.
Ambiverts can sometimes exhibit bipolar tendencies. Haha, I’m not kidding. Some people may snap at you for some unknown reason just after five minutes of interaction. But you may find them talking to some stranger on the streets for fifteen minutes. Well, this is nothing to be alarmed about. Like I said earlier, ambiverts can be really choosy at times. They might not appear emotional on the outside. But on the inside, they may be extremely sensitive. Ironically, there are some ambiverts who would love to have a huge bunch of friends, but may come off as introverted. These guys are closet party animals, only they think about socializing with people they’d like to be friends with rather than actually going and talking to them. I personally think that they are out of better ideas to spend their time.
So the thing about ambiverts is that they may like to party on occasion, but they may also hate to be around loud people for a long time. But if you leave them alone for too long, they would become depressed and awfully bored. Perplexing balance of nature.
