When dealing with computer graphics, any expert will tell you that there are different types of images or graphic files; these are usually selected based on the use of the image, compatibility of the files, especially where the files are to be shared among different people. The kind of file format used also depends of the intended size of the file. Certain file formats result in change of file size.
Converting a picture file from bitmap to Vector refers to the processes of changing a picture/image from common formats such as JPEG which is built up of discrete dots referred to as pixels, into one of lines and complex strokes known as vectors. Bitmap images are made up of single dots; the density of these pixels in any image is what determines the image quality. This density (or number of dots per square inch) is what we commonly refer to as resolution.

... images appear better with higher resolutions which often results in larger file sizes. One of the major advantages of converting and image from bitmap to vector is so as to maintain the quality of the image allowing it to be manipulated into literally any size. Converting an image from bitmap to vector changes the colour properties and appearance. This results in a much crisper colour scheme. A vector image therefore appears to have a better look with significantly low files size.
Because vector images can be scaled or resized without affecting the quality of the image, graphic designers prefer converting an image from bitmap to vector whenever the image is to be used on larger displays such as on banners. This enables the use of designs or images of much lower resolution on bigger canvases. Through converting of images from bitmap to Vector, certain designs such as logos, artwork and corporate images can then be printed out in much better quality on large displays for purposes such as branding and large outdoor advertisement.
The appearances of images that have been converted from bitmap to vector are also ideal for certain in graphic designs. Vector images have a unique appearance which is ideal for creating certain effects during graphic designs. Vector images can be used for example when changing the appearance of a real image into a cartoon like version of the same. The image appears exactly the same but with a change in the details.
Converting an image from bitmap to vector also allows for numerous changes in the colours, since bitmap to vector images results in images consisting of lines and strokes which can be conveniently manipulated using simpler graphic applications. The colours on vector images can also be easily changed using graphic applications and can be modified to the desired look.
It is these advantages that have led to many graphic designers preferring the use vector formats over bitmaps in graphic design. The process of converting images from bitmap can be a tricky affair especially when trying to retain quality of the original image. This has been made easy through introduction of different conversion methods.
