The years of 960-1979 CE marked the beginning of screen-printing, first being introduced by the Song Dynasty. Many Asian countries such as Japan already actively pursued block printing for their printing purposes, adding screen-printing later on during the time period. Asia first introduced screen-printing to Western Europe sometime during the late 1700s, but did not really gain Europe's attention until silk mesh was more obtainable for trade. This allowed for a new valuable outlet for medium to be discovered.

The original patent for screen-printing was given to Samuel Simon of England in 1907. Screen-printing was originally popular for its use in printing off expensive wallpapers for different types of fine fabrics, such as silk and linen. Some western screen-printers worked undercover to keep their workshop's techniques and knowledge from others, often developing exclusionary and defensive policies to do so.

During the 1910s printers were using and experimenting with chemicals that are often used in photo reactive actinic light with also contains the hardening quality of potassium. Roy Beck, Charles ...
... Peter, and Edward own were all intensely interested and often experiments with chromic acid emulsions used for stencils that were photo reactive. These developers were determined to revolutionize the industry and verify that creating photo image stencils can do commercial screen-printing. Even though it took years to be accepted, this method eventually became a well-known way to screen print. In this day and age, commercial screen-printing actively uses sensitizers, which contain less toxic than located in bichormates. Currently a large variety of pre sensitized and user mixed sensitized chemicals for making reactive photo stencils are available.

Screen-printing was originally seen as profitable industrialized technology, but later embraced by artists as a convenient and expressive medium for duplication before the 1900s. Fine art and commercial screen-printing are very efficient ways to promote their products, for example DVDs, wood, hats, ceramics, and t-shirts.

An American entrepreneur and artist named Michael Vasilantone developed and patented a rotary multicolor apparel screen-printing machine during the 1960s. The original rotary machine was created to print logos and other team information onto bowling uniforms, otherwise making a new fad of printing t-shirts. A production increase for printed t-shirts resulted from multiple manufacturers being licensed to utilize the machine as they please. The outcome of this caused the rotary clothing screen-printing machine to be one of the most cherished screen-printing devices in the world. Apparel with screen-printing naturally accounts for more than half of screen-printing production in America.
