10 Upcoming Small Cars In India
Amidst the increasing demand for the small cars in the Indian market, more and more international car makers are mulling to roll-out their small cars in the country to make the most of the existing high growth potential. In last one year, a number of global car makers have shown their interest in debuting in this segment to rival the current segment leader Maruti Alto and other competing cars like Chevrolet Spark and Hyundai EON. Here we are enlisting the names and details of the prospective small cars that are expected to mark their debut in the Indian market in the coming months.
1)Mitsubishi Mirage: - It is Mitsubishi’s first product from its global small car platform that will be initially launched in the Thailand market in April 2012. Powered by a 1.2 Liter petrol engine, the Mitsubishi Mirage is claimed to be delivering a considerably high fuel economy of up to 20 km per liter with a very low carbon emission of 120g/km and is compatible with the safety standards United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.

... small car: - This will be a joint venture car that will be positioned below the Nissan’s existing cheapest portfolio car Micra. The car will be rolled-out in direct competition with the country’s largest selling small car Maruti Alto, in the price segment of sub Rs 3 lakh. However, the specifications and time-line of the launch of this model is yet to be revealed by the company.
3)Ford B-MAX: - The Ford B-MAX is the latest small car sensation that was showcased at the Geneva Auto Show, recently. The good news is that Ford India will launch this small car in the Indian market. The company has said that the B-MAX small car model will go on production in the emerging markets by the end of this year, which will be followed by its launch in the countries like India.
4)Renault Modus: - The Renault Modus is the next planned product in the top to down strategy of Renault India. The car has been spotted testing a number of times near company’s plant in Chennai. Internationally available in two body types, the car is expected to be launched in only smaller body types in India – Modus (not Grand Modus). It is the first car that got 5 Star Euro NCAP safety rating. The company is expected to take about 1 and half year to launch this car in the county.
5)Skoda Citigo: - It has been long speculated that Volkswagen’s Czech Republic based subsidiary Skoda will be rolling-out its small car Citigo in the Indian market in the near future. The car will be positioned below the segment of Fabia hatchback in India, where it will be competing with the likes of Hyundai EON and i10, Maruti Alto and Wagon R and Chevrolet Spark. The car is expected to be offered in two 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engines, delivering 60PS and 75PS, respectively. A Green Tec version of the car is also expected to be launched with exceptionally high fuel economy of up to 23.8 km per liter.

6)Volkswagen UP: - After the success of mass segment models Polo and Vento in India, the company is now planning to launch its iconic small car UP in the country very soon. The UP model will be shelved in the segment of Rs 3 to 4 lakh, where it will be taking on with the likes of Hyundai i10, Maruti Alto K10 and Wagon R and A-Star. The car is expected to be offered in both petrol and diesel versions powered by 1.0-litre petrol and 1.2-litre diesel engine.
7)Fiat Small Car: - Fiat India will soon be launching a new small car in the Indian market to rival Maruti Alto in the price segment of Rs 3 to 5 lakh. The car is speculated to be carrying a 1.0L petrol engine with high fuel economy and considerably low emission levels.
8)Tata Nano 800 CC: - After almost two years of the launch of country’s cheapest car Tata Nano, Tata Motors is now planning to launch a higher end version of this car with an 800 CC petrol engine. The new 800 CC Nano is expected to mark its debut in the country by next year, where it will be fighting for space with the like of Maruti Alto, Chevrolet Spark and Hyundai EON. Besides having a more powerful engine, the new Nano will be having a number of additional features at both exterior and interior fronts.
9)Maruti New Small Car: - The small car king Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch a new generation small car in the Indian market to replace it’s the oldest and the most popular Maruti 800 model. Though the company is yet to reveal the timeline of launch and specification details of this car in India, but market watcher are speculating its debut in the Indian market sooner than later. The major competitor of this car will be country’s cheapest car Tata Nano, which is currently available in the price segment of Rs 1.5 to 2.5 lakh.
10)Mahindra Small car: - The country’s largest utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra is also planning to try its luck in the small passenger car segment with the launch of new 1000cc car in India. The car is expected to be shelved in the price segment of sub Rs 3 lakh, where it will be competing with Maruti’s Alto, Wagon R, Hyundai EON and I10 and Chevrolet Spark.
The entry of all these small cars in Indian car market in the coming future will prove a major competition booster in the small car segment, which will ultimately benefit the middle class buyers who are looking forward to upgrade from two-wheeler to four wheeler segments. The fierce competition in this segment will not only force car makers to price their cars more competitively but will also force them to adopt more environment friendly approach and fuel efficient technologies in the production of their small cars.
